Genres
A strategy video game emphasizes strategic or tactical planning and decision-making, often through indirect control of multiple units and management of limited resources. The core loop is to gather resources, turn them into units, buildings or research, and use them to gain ground on an opponent. Subgenres include real-time strategy, such as StarCraft, and turn-based strategy and 4X games such as Civilization.
Strategy games need AI opponents and pathfinding so units find routes around obstacles. Turn-based games need turn logic that decides who acts when, either alternating or simultaneous. Many hide information with fog of war, so the game must track what each side has seen.
In a browser, heavy work such as pathfinding for many units or an AI opponent's planning can run in a Web Worker, a background thread that keeps the main thread free for input and drawing.
