Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It runs as an open-source command-line tool under the Apache-2.0 license, as an IDE extension for VS Code and Cursor, in the ChatGPT desktop app and as a cloud agent at chatgpt.com/codex.
For a game, you point Codex at a project folder and describe what to build or fix. The desktop app's built-in browser previews a local dev server and takes screenshots, and Codex can generate images, including sprite sheets, backgrounds and UI assets. MCP servers connect it to engines: Unity's official server and the community Godot AI server both list Codex as a client.
As of September 2026, every ChatGPT plan includes Codex, from Free and Go to Enterprise, and the CLI and IDE extension also run on an OpenAI API key.
