OpenAI makes the GPT models, ChatGPT and the Codex coding agent. As of September 2026 its API docs recommend three models. GPT-6 Astra (released September 3, 2026) is for complex reasoning and coding, GPT-6.1 Sol (September 29) balances intelligence and cost, and GPT-6 Luna (September 22) handles high-volume work. Its GPT Image 2.5 models, released September 8, generate and edit images.

An API key also works in the CLI and IDE.
