An idle game, also called an incremental game, is built around gradual, often exponential growth of in-game resources through repetitive actions or automation. Clicker games stress active clicking, while idle games automate most of the work. The core loop is to earn currency, spend it on upgrades that earn more, and often reset for a permanent bonus called prestige. Cookie Clicker and AdVenture Capitalist are well-known examples.
The code is mostly numbers and saved state. It needs a way to store and display very large values, with scientific notation or suffixes such as M and T, plus a timed update that adds income.
Browsers throttle timers and stop requestAnimationFrame in background tabs, so progress made while the tab is hidden or closed has to be worked out from the clock when the player returns. localStorage keeps the save between visits.
