Best AI for game development: 6 tools compared

By GamesByAI · Updated · 24 sources

Which tool should you pick?

Pick the tool your current plan already covers, then judge it on one small game. The choice is between two kinds of tool: agents and editors that work in your project folder, and prompt-to-app builders in the browser.

  • Claude Code if you pay for a Claude plan. Paid plans include it, and creators list it more often than any other tool. Read the Claude Code guide.
  • Codex if you pay for ChatGPT. Every ChatGPT plan includes it, and creators list it on the games that placed #2 and #3 in the jam. Read the Codex guide.
  • Cursor if you want an editor where you read and edit the code beside an agent. Hobby is free, and creators list it on the games that placed #4 and #5 in the jam. Read the Cursor guide.
  • Lovable or Bolt to stay in the browser and publish from the tool. Both have free tiers, but they appear on only 8 and 6 listed games, so there is little evidence to compare.
  • Antigravity for a free start with Gemini models. It is free for individual developers and appears on 16 listed games. Read make games with Gemini.

The tools also combine. Anthropic lists a Claude Code extension for Cursor, and the Codex README lists an extension for VS Code, Cursor and Windsurf.

How the six tools compare

Claude Code and Codex are agents, Cursor is an editor, Lovable and Bolt are browser builders, and Antigravity is an agent-first IDE. Leaving out chat apps, these are the six tools named most often on our 404 listed games. The Claude app is named on 19 games and the Gemini app on 8.

A name check for searchers: Codex here is OpenAI’s coding agent, and Cursor is the AI code editor from Anysphere; board games and aim trainers with those names are something else. This page covers tools that write game code. Art, audio and NPC tools have their own pages, such as game assets with AI.

Unity and Godot

Claude Code, Codex and Cursor all write C# and GDScript, and MCP servers let them drive the editors as well. Unity’s own AI tools, for Unity 6 or later, include a gateway that brings Claude, Codex or Gemini into the editor (Unity). Unity also publishes an official Claude Code plugin with 29 skills (Unity blog), which its README says works in Codex too (repo).

Unity’s CLI connects Claude Code or Cursor to a running editor through unity mcp configure (Unity CLI). For Godot, community servers such as godot-mcp launch the project and read its debug output. MCP servers for game development covers setup for both.

Our catalog can’t separate the tools on these engines, with 2 Unity and 6 Godot games among the 404 we list.

What the catalog’s games show

Creators name Claude Code most often, but the jam’s top five games split among Claude Code, Codex and Cursor. Data note: as of September 30, 2026 the catalog lists 404 games, and 367 of them are Vibe Jam 2026 entries (jam rules: at least 90% of the code written by AI). Creators name the tools themselves, mostly in the jam submission form. We don’t verify them.

Tool Listed games Top-ten Vibe Jam 2026 games we list
Claude Code 169 (42%) 2
Cursor 86 (21%) 2
Codex 73 (18%) 3
Antigravity 16 0
Lovable 8 0
Bolt 6 0

The #1 game, A Game About Capybaras Delivering Food, lists Claude Code. Fanto’s Mega-Mart (#2) and WenWare (#3) list Codex, and Null Range (#4) and HALDANE-4 (#5) list Cursor. Further down, Sunset City - The Dark Tower (#8) lists Claude Code and Kanso (#9) lists Codex. The jam’s results post names the top three, and we list 7 of the top ten.

The next table compares the games of the three leading tools, as shares of each tool’s games.

Tool Use Three.js Playable on mobile Online multiplayer Top genre
Claude Code (169 games) 63% 66% 46% Action
Cursor (86 games) 74% 65% 51% Action
Codex (73 games) 71% 59% 49% Action
All 404 games 66% 63% 43% Action

Action is the most common genre for all three tools, so genre does not separate them. Most games of each tool use Three.js and list mobile, as most games in the catalog do.

Read the counts with care. They show what creators of listed games used; they don’t rank the tools. Cursor sponsored the jam, which is called Cursor Vibe Jam 2026 on its official page, and Bolt.new sponsored it too. The press page recommends both tools, which may raise their counts.

Shares in the Listed games column use all 404 games as the base. Of those games, 22 name more than one tool, 28 name none, and 19 name a model version.

Tools or models?

The tables compare tools because only 19 of the 404 listings name a model version. Claude Code runs Claude models from Anthropic, Codex runs GPT models from OpenAI, and Cursor lets you choose between several makers.

For the makers behind the tools, see games made with Claude and OpenAI games. The jam rules allow any engine and recommend Three.js (jam rules), and 266 of the 404 games use it. Browse those on the Three.js hub.

Method and date

We read each maker’s own documentation and pricing pages in September 2026, so every tool fact is as of that month. The tool counts cover the 404 games in our catalog as of September 30, 2026, with the tools their creators named. We ran no benchmarks, and this page does not rank tools by quality. Prices and plans change, so check the linked pages before you pay.
