Best vibe coding game engine: what AI games use
Which engine should you pick?
Pick by the kind of game first, then by how much you want the engine to do for you. For a browser game, that usually means Three.js or Phaser.
- Three.js for 3D. It runs 265 of our 403 games, including A Game About Capybaras Delivering Food, the winner of Vibe Jam 2026.
- Phaser for 2D with physics, input and scenes included. Its README calls it “AI-ready,” and its repository includes AI agent skills for every major subsystem.
- PixiJS for a fast 2D renderer when you write the game logic yourself. OpenAI’s Codex guide pairs it, or Phaser, with Next.js.
- No engine for a small canvas or text game. In our catalog, 74 games name none, among them HALDANE-4 (#5).
- Godot for a free 2D and 3D engine with its own language, GDScript, if you accept the web export’s limits.
- Babylon.js or PlayCanvas for 3D with a physics engine integrated, Havok and ammo.js. Few games in our catalog use them: 5 and 2.
This page covers engines for games that run in a browser. Every engine fact is as of September 2026 and links to the maker’s own page.
How do the engines compare?
They differ on 2D or 3D, the language and how much comes built in. Apart from the browser’s own Canvas API, every option in the table is open source.
| Engine | 2D or 3D | Code | License | Physics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Three.js | 3D | JavaScript | MIT | Addon, such as RapierPhysics |
| Phaser | 2D | JavaScript or TypeScript | MIT | Built in: Arcade and Matter.js |
| PixiJS | 2D | JavaScript | MIT | None listed: a 2D renderer |
| HTML5 Canvas | 2D, and 3D through WebGL | JavaScript | Part of the browser | None |
| Godot | 2D and 3D | GDScript, C# or C++ | MIT | Built in |
| Babylon.js | 3D | JavaScript, with TypeScript typings | Apache-2.0 | Havok plugin, free under MIT |
| PlayCanvas | 2D and 3D | JavaScript or TypeScript | MIT | ammo.js, integrated |
Sources for the table:
- Three.js: its README and the RapierPhysics docs.
- Phaser and PixiJS: their READMEs (Phaser, PixiJS).
- Canvas: MDN.
- Godot: its site, license, physics docs and web export docs.
- Babylon.js and PlayCanvas: the Babylon.js README, its Havok docs and the PlayCanvas README.
A few limits matter on the web. Godot 4 targets WebGL 2 through its Compatibility renderer, cannot export C# projects to the web, and pauses when the player switches tabs. Babylon.js’s Havok plugin needs WebAssembly SIMD, which iOS before 16.4 does not support. Three.js’s RapierPhysics addon loads Rapier from a CDN, so it needs a connection. PlayCanvas adds a browser-based visual editor and loads 3D Gaussian Splats.
What do the games made with each engine show?
Three.js leads at every level of the jam. Data note: counts come from the 403 live games in our catalog as of September 30, 2026, with the engine each entry records. Of those, 367 are Vibe Jam 2026 entries, and rank is the final placement among 945 (press page).
| Engine | Games | List mobile | Online multiplayer | In the jam’s top 50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Three.js | 265 | 176 (66%) | 119 (45%) | 29 |
| No engine named | 74 | 49 (66%) | 27 (36%) | 3 |
| Phaser | 20 | 13 | 8 | 0 |
| HTML5 Canvas | 18 | 5 | 6 | 1 |
| PixiJS | 10 | 7 | 5 | 0 |
| Godot | 6 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Babylon.js | 5 | 1 | 5 | 0 |
| PlayCanvas | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
| Unity | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
| React Three Fiber | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Three.js has 29 of the 34 games we list in the jam’s top 50, and 248 of all 367 jam entries (68%). Among games that are not jam entries, it still leads, with 17 of 36.
The best placement without Three.js is HALDANE-4 (#5), which names no engine. Strilecka (#15) names none either, and Almost Surgery (#28) uses Godot. The top 100 also includes onbeat (#50) on a canvas, Banished (#56) on PlayCanvas, Tech Bros: Save the World (#63) on PixiJS and Reach the Relay (#65) on Phaser.
Phones split the engines too. Only 1 of 6 Godot games and 5 of 18 canvas games list mobile. Godot’s docs warn that CPU and GPU performance is at a premium on mobile devices, even more so for a web export (Godot docs).
Read the counts with care. The jam’s rules said “usually ThreeJS is recommended” (jam rules), and its press page recommended Three.js for browser-first 3D (press page). The small groups say little: with 5 Babylon.js games, a 100% online multiplayer share describes those few games and tells you almost nothing about the engine.
Which engine does your AI tool know best?
The makers’ docs point different ways. OpenAI’s Codex guide for browser games names “Next.js with Phaser or PixiJS” as “a practical default for browser-based game UI plus the rendering layer” (Codex use case). It does not mention Three.js.
Phaser’s README says “Phaser’s API is well understood by every major frontier LLM,” and its repository includes AI agent skills for scenes, physics, input, animations, tilemaps and more (Phaser). The claim is Phaser’s own, and the README cites no test behind it.
In our data, games made with the three most-named tools mostly use Three.js anyway. That holds for 106 of 169 Claude Code games, 64 of 86 Cursor games and 51 of 72 Codex games. The Claude Code vs Codex comparison covers the tools themselves.
Can you vibe code a game without an engine?
Yes, and 74 of our games name none. MDN says the Canvas API draws graphics with JavaScript and can be used for animation and game graphics. WebGL uses the same canvas element for hardware-accelerated 2D and 3D graphics (MDN).
Text works too. HALDANE-4 (#5) tells its story in ASCII characters, Dragonwake (#106) is a roguelike drawn in ASCII, and IdleWorlds (#122) is a text-based online RPG. The creator of Oyster Arcade says all of its graphics are drawn on an HTML5 Canvas rather than with a separate game engine.
Can you vibe code in Godot, Unity or React Three Fiber?
Yes. A coding agent writes Godot’s GDScript and Unity’s C# like any other code, and an MCP server lets it drive the editor as well.
- Godot. Scenes and scripts are text files the agent can edit. Community MCP servers such as Coding-Solo/godot-mcp add tools to launch the editor, run the project and read its debug output (godot-mcp). Almost Surgery (#28) is the best-placed Godot game we list.
- Unity. Unity’s CLI includes an MCP server that drives a running editor on Unity 6.0 LTS or later. You connect it with
unity mcp configurefor clients such as Claude Code and Cursor (Unity docs). Its web builds use WebGL2 by default, and WebGPU support is experimental (Unity manual). Unity runs 2 of our games, among them Destined Heroes Tactics (#484). - React Three Fiber is “a React renderer for three.js,” and its docs say everything that works in Three.js works in it too (React Three Fiber). Ombres, a party game for up to 12 players who steer from their phones, is built with it.
MCP servers for game development has the setup for each.
Method and date
We read each engine’s README, site or documentation on September 29, 2026, so every engine fact is as of September 2026. The counts cover the engine recorded in each of the 403 live catalog entries as of September 30, 2026, with each jam entry’s final Vibe Jam 2026 rank. We ran no benchmarks, and the counts show use, not quality.

Questions
What is the best game engine for vibe coding?
For browser games, Three.js in 3D and Phaser in 2D, going by our data and the makers' own docs. Three.js runs 265 of the 403 games in our catalog, and Phaser's README says its API is well understood by every major frontier LLM.
Is Godot good for vibe coding?
It works, with limits on the web. Agents write GDScript and scene files as text, and community MCP servers such as godot-mcp let them run the project and read its errors. Godot 4 exports to the web with WebAssembly and WebGL 2 but cannot export C# projects there. Almost Surgery, made in Godot, placed 28th in Vibe Jam 2026.
Can AI coding agents make Unity or Godot games?
Yes. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor write Unity's C# and Godot's GDScript like any other code, and MCP servers let them drive the editor. Unity's CLI includes one for Unity 6.0 LTS and later, and Godot has community servers. For a browser release, Godot 4 can't export C# to the web, and Unity's web builds use WebGL2 by default.
Should I use Phaser or Three.js?
Phaser for 2D and Three.js for 3D. Phaser includes Arcade and Matter.js physics, while Three.js adds physics through addons such as RapierPhysics. In our catalog, Three.js has 265 games and Phaser 20.
Do you need a game engine to vibe code a game?
No. In our catalog, 74 of the 403 games name no engine, including HALDANE-4, an ASCII horror story that placed fifth in Vibe Jam 2026. The browser's Canvas API draws game graphics with JavaScript.
Which engine does OpenAI suggest for Codex?
Its Codex guide for browser games calls Next.js with Phaser or PixiJS a practical default for game UI plus the rendering layer. It does not mention Three.js.
