Kiro is an agentic IDE that Amazon Web Services builds and operates, introduced on July 14, 2025. It is built on Code OSS, so VS Code settings and Open VSX plugins carry over, and it also comes as a CLI, a web app and a mobile app.
Kiro centers on spec-driven development: a prompt becomes requirements, a design and a sequenced task list before any code is written. Hooks run automations when files change, and steering files keep project rules in place. MCP servers connect other tools, and Unity lists Kiro as a client of its official MCP server.
Models come from Anthropic, OpenAI and open-weight makers such as DeepSeek and Qwen, plus an Auto mode that picks one by task. As of September 2026, the free plan includes 50 credits, and Pro costs $20 a month for 1,000 credits.
