A rhythm game is a music-themed action game that challenges the player's sense of rhythm. Players press buttons in a set sequence in time with music, and the game awards points for accuracy and for staying in sync with the beat. The core loop is a song: read the on-screen prompts, hit them on time, and raise your score. PaRappa the Rapper (1996), Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero are examples.
Timing is the main code problem. The game keeps note prompts in sync with the audio, judges each input against the beat and scores it, and many show upcoming notes on a scrolling note highway. Some rely on special controllers, such as guitars or dance mats.
In a browser, notes are scheduled against the Web Audio API's audio clock, currentTime, which runs separately from the system clock behind Date.now(). Browsers block audio until the player interacts, so a song can only start after a click or key press.
