A platformer is an action game whose core objective is to move the player character between points in an environment, over uneven terrain and suspended platforms that require jumping and climbing. The core loop is to run, time jumps across gaps, avoid hazards such as pits, and reach the end of the level. Donkey Kong (1981) and Super Mario Bros. (1985) are classic examples.
Platformers live on movement code: gravity, a jump model (a fixed arc, or one the player can steer mid-air) and collision tests against terrain and hazards. Levels are commonly built from a grid of tiles, and scrolling levels need a camera that converts world coordinates to screen coordinates.
On the web, the Gamepad API reads controllers and phones need on-screen buttons built with pointer events. Physics should use the elapsed time from requestAnimationFrame, or the game runs faster on high refresh-rate screens.
