AI-made open world games

An open world game is set in a virtual world where the player can approach objectives freely, rather than following a linear, structured path. The core loop is to explore a large map, pick a mission or side activity, and choose what to do next. The Legend of Zelda (1986), Grand Theft Auto III (2001), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011) and Breath of the Wild (2017) are examples.

The main technical problem is size. Large maps use level streaming, which loads assets as the player approaches new areas, and procedural generation is one way to fill big worlds. The game also keeps persistent state, so what the player does has lasting consequences in the world.

In a browser, IndexedDB can cache downloaded areas and store world state, 3D worlds render with WebGL or WebGPU, and first-person mouse look uses the Pointer Lock API.
