A sandbox game gives players a great degree of freedom to interact creatively, usually with no predetermined goal or with goals the players set themselves, such as building a house. The core loop is open-ended: gather or place material, change the world, and decide what to try next. Minecraft and Garry's Mod are well-known examples.
Sandbox games need a world the player can change and that stays changed. The code holds a persistent world state and a physics or interaction system that responds to what players do, and many use block or voxel grids. Some let players share what they make.
In a browser, IndexedDB can store a large changed world as structured data, and 3D block worlds render with WebGL or its successor, WebGPU.
