Genres
An .io game is a browser-based multiplayer game, a category often named for the .io domain. The genre took off in the mid-2010s: Agar.io launched in April 2015 and Slither.io in March 2016. The core loop is short: join a shared arena, start small, eat food or defeat other players to grow, and climb the leaderboard until someone knocks you out.
An .io game runs one shared, real-time world with many players at once, so a server has to track every player while each browser sends input and draws the result. Browsers hold that two-way connection through the WebSocket API, which avoids polling the server for replies.
Pointer events let one set of controls work with a mouse, a pen or a finger, so the same arena runs on desktops and phones.
