Engines
PlayCanvas is an open-source web game engine built on WebGL2 and WebGPU, with a browser-based, collaborative Editor. The PlayCanvas site says the entire platform is open source on GitHub under the MIT license. As of September 2026, the Editor's free plan covers unlimited public projects, 1GB of storage and hosting, and private projects need a paid plan.
Code-first projects install the engine from npm or use its React and web-component libraries, so an agent writes JavaScript or TypeScript against the API. Editor projects can use the official PlayCanvas Editor MCP server. It lets Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents create entities and scripts, edit assets and scenes, launch the game, read console logs and take screenshots.
The engine also handles glTF models, WebXR and 3D Gaussian splats.
